Marine reserve the size of Mexico!

Posted on 9th August 2014 by Brett Caporn (LRRecords) in must see must do,web - Tags: , , , ,

Right now, the US government is receiving public comments on whether or not to create theworld’s largest Marine Protected Area in the Pacific Ocean. But President Obama is underenormous pressure from a powerful fishing lobby to water down the plan.

We can’t let that happen — majestic whales, turtles and fish stocks are all disappearing. Scientists say the best way to save our oceans is to protect large swaths from exploitation so that marine life can recover. Four years ago, we played a pivotal role persuading the UK government to create a massive marine sanctuary in the Indian Ocean, and the UK Foreign Ministry cited our campaign in its announcement. Now, if we all speak out, we can create a reserve the size of Mexico!

If we send Obama a tidal wave of global public support now, we will empower him to counter opposition and help save our oceans for generations to comeSign the petition below and tell everyone — let’s deliver one million voices before the official consultation closes in days:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/ocean_of_hope_loc/?bVtZWbb&v=43628

The reports are dire: in less than 4 decades, our oceans could be completely fished-out and coral reefs might be dead within our grandchildren’s lifetime! This new plan alone won’t be enough to fix the problem, but it could start turning the tide against global ocean destruction — it will not onlydouble the worldwide oceanic area that is fully protected, but also encourage other governments to follow suit.

Obama says he is willing to use executive action to implement the plan, but a powerful fishing lobby is trying to sink it with misleading propaganda. They say the sanctuary will hurt their business, but 95% of the fishing they’re talking about happens outside of the protected zone.Other interests want to keep the area open for future drilling and mining, which could be disastrous.

The comment period is only open for a few more days, and on August 11th the government will consult with local interest groups in Hawaii to scope out the plan. If we build a million strong global petition now and deliver it straight into the White House and the Hawaii meeting, flood the official consultation with support, and run a poll that shows massive public support near the site, we can drown them out.

With the greatest ownership of ocean in the world, the US now has a tremendous opportunity in the Pacific. Let’s drown out the opposition, and lay the foundation for protecting our oceans from exploitation. Sign the petition below, and forward it to friends and family:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/ocean_of_hope_loc/?bVtZWbb&v=43628

Our oceans are being decimated by a myriad of threats. But time and again Avaaz members have rallied to save our precious marine life. We have helped secure massive ocean sanctuaries before and plans to protect tuna and whales. We can win this!

With hope,

Danny, Luis, Lisa, Andrea, Ricken, Ana Sofia and the whole Avaaz team

ROCKWELL – INeedU/1_2_3_4

Review:
One of drum & bass’ true innovators, Rockwell spends his time wisely over at Shogun Audio creating only the best messed-up beats from a mind-bendingly diverse spectrum of influences. “INeedU” is a skitterish firefly of a track, complete with hyped-up ADD beats stolen from a Rave mixtape circa ’93 and samples from every corner of his record collection. “1_2_3_4″ features harsher than harsh pads throughout, creating a hard techno blast through the neon wormhole of Rockwell’s D&B fever fit. More Bangface than Sun and Bass, it’s an amazing mental breakdown of a tune that somehow works itself out into quite the little mover. Be prepared for a scare.

Juno Plus is a London based online editorial hub affiliated with Juno Records that has been in operation since September 2009.

We aim to focus on all manner of electronic music, looking to give a balanced viewpoint on established artists and labels as well as the boutique operations and producers that might fly under the radar of wider appreciation. Juno Plus take particular pride in championing vinyl-focused labels that place importance on quality music and artwork. Our editorial team is small but eminently knowledgeable and we place an emphasis on quality over content, aiming to provide a wealth of information for followers of contemporary electronic music.

Along with our daily news feed and the regularly updated A/V stream, you can expect regular in-depth features and interviews with the artists and labels that are currently shaping our own musical tastes. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring our reviews of the latest EPs, albums and compilations read better than mere book reports. Noting that there’s a deluge of regular podcasts, our own growing mix series will remain on a fortnightly axis and hopefully not sacrifice the standards of quality set over its duration since it began in earnest in 2011.

Get Involved in the War for a better Humanity!

Where We Stand

The Earth is dying. No — the Earth is being killed. We are losing cultural and biological diversity at rates unheard of in the history of our species, and despite all our efforts, these rates are only accelerating.

From global warming to genocide, the crises that confront us are not accidental — as if politicians and business leaders were somehow independently deciding to murder union organizers, pollute the seas or strip the land. Rather, these atrocities flow from a global economic system that requires them to maintain its functioning.

The Earth is being murdered by a global system that tortures and murders every human or nonhuman that it cannot dominate. This system kills hundreds of thousands of civilians a year in wars for oil and water. It tortures millions of nonhuman animals a year in laboratories and factory farms. It destroys indigenous communities, dispossesses small farmers, enslaves workers in fields and factories, and poisons every living thing with chemicals and radiation.

War has been declared, and we are all losing. These are not opinions. These are well-known, well-documented truths. The question is, what are we going to do about it?

What is Root Force?

Root Force is a strategic campaign designed to exploit weak points in the global economy and hasten the system’s collapse.

Root Force:

1. Promotes anti-infrastructure analysis and action, based on the recognition that infrastructure expansion is a weak point of the system. Because the US economy is particularly dependent on the resources of Latin America, Root Force emphasizes opposing the infrastructure that provides access to those resources.

2. Provides resources to anyone fighting infrastructure.

3. Makes it easy for people to plug in to anti-infrastructure organizing, even if there is no current anti-infrastructure campaign nearby.

4. Facilitates connections and information sharing between groups and campaigns that are working against infrastructure.

To learn more about Root Force, follow the links to the right.

Want to skip the theory and go straight to the action? Get involved!

Join the Uprising!

With your participation, the Root Force campaign can be a potent tool to help bring this system down. But it needs you. The whole planet needs you.

It’s time for all of us to make sure that “solidarity” and “revolution” are more than just empty words. It’s time to renounce a First-World privilege founded on genocide and extinction.

It’s time to bring it all down.

Join thousands — The holy sh*t response to climate change

Posted on 1st July 2014 by Brett Caporn (LRRecords) in must see must do,web - Tags: ,

The last ice age happened in 6 months. 6 months for the planet to unleash an army of apartment-building-size ice blocks across Europe and the United States. It was a climate tipping point where the balance is knocked completely out of control and threatens the survival of everything — andthree more tipping points exactly like it are on the verge of happening.

It’s our “holy shit” climate moment according to a leading NASA scientist, and only a holy shit massive coordinated day of action response, right now, can change the future we’re facing.

One agreement with common sense steps to end dirty energy can save us. That’s why the UN has called an urgent climate meeting in just over 100 days with all major world leaders — if we greet them on September 21st with the largest ever global climate mobilisation in history we can break through the walls of mega coal, oil, and business that prevent even the best politicians from doing what is right.

There’s no way to get around how big a task this is. But together, each small action will add up into a millions-strong movement that literally drowns out the opposition and gives our leaders the best reason to break free and build a hopeful, clean and green future. Click below to join in:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/join_to_change_everything_rb/?bVtZWbb&v=41536

“Tipping points” are feedback loops, where climate change feeds back on itself and causes rapidly accelerating, catastrophic consequences. Right now, methane gas that is 25 times worse for global warming than CO2 is frozen in our ice. But as the ice melts, the gas leaks, causing more melting and each melt loses us another layer of reflective ice shield that we rely on to keep the planet cool, more methane and less ice means more warming still, and everything starts to spin out of control. And that’s just one example… it’s why scientists are yelling from the rooftops that we have to act now.

We actually have the tools and the plan we need to make sure we don’t cross into a world where tipping points destroy us. And while it will take global cooperation on a bigger scale than ever before, our 36 million-strong movement already has the people power necessary to move leaders from every country to take the first steps. Just days ago, the United States and China announced serious new plans to curb their pollution — momentum is building ahead of next year’s critical Paris climate summit where a deal could be inked, and in just over 100 days we can take it up a notch further.

Taking to the streets in a record setting show of power and coordination is one of the most effective ways to create change — from the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa to civil rights in the US, it’s sometimes been the only way. This is our chance to bring that power to the most important issue of our time: survival and a thriving future for our families, and their families and the generations of people to come. Click below to be a part of it all:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/join_to_change_everything_rb/?bVtZWbb&v=41536

We know we can do this… and do it big. When our community was just 3 million people we held 3,000 actions on the same day to protect our planet. We’re now 36 million strong, ten times the size! Imagine what we can achieve together now…

With so much hope for our future,

Emma, Iain, Lisa, Ricken, Alice, Emily, Sayeeda, Uilleam and the rest of the Avaaz team

Breaking – community stations at risk

Posted on 6th May 2014 by Brett Caporn (LRRecords) in music,music news/stuff,must see must do,national - Tags: , , , ,

Our community radio stations are at serious risk.

The Commission of Audit last week recommended that funding for the Community Broadcasting Program be scrapped.

The Government is set to hand down its Federal Budget on Tuesday. If the Government adopts the Commission of Audit’s recommendation in the budget, we could see community radio stations across the country forced off air.

Will you help protect our community radio stations by emailing the Treasurer now?

We have less than five days to ensure cuts to community radio stations don’t end up in the budget.

Take a minute right now to email the Treasurer Joe Hockey and tell him that our community radio stations are too important to be put on the scrap heap.

We know that community radio is an integral part of the Australian broadcasting landscape. Community radio provides vital content for so many different communities, especially Indigenous, ethnic, seniors, youth, the vision impaired, religious, and the arts communities.

We can’t afford to lose any of the stations who provide local content that commercial and public broadcasters can’t or won’t cater for.

Help protect our community radio stations by clicking here to email the Treasurer.

Thanks for your support,

Adrian Basso,

President, Community Broadcasting Association of Australia
and the Commit to Community Radio team
